Reading the passage
We've already predicted that these prepaid plans are unlikely to produce lasting client satisfaction or increased law-firm profits. The opening explains their popularity, but the final paragraph argues that their incentives undermine the promised benefits.
What we’re looking for
Look for that judgment about the plans, not just a report that some lawyers dislike them.
Working the answers
- A
This gives the lawyers a profitable outcome at the clients' expense. The writer doubts the longer-term benefits for both groups, including a substantial increase in law-firm profits.
- B
Probably effective makes the overall judgment favorable. That misses the final paragraph's concern that lower fees and less expertise will undermine the promised results.
- C
The objection isn't that the plans distribute benefits unfairly. Nor does the writer propose a more equitable replacement. C adds both a different criticism and a solution.
- D
This captures the reported lawyers' complaints, especially in paragraph two. But the main point goes further: the writer predicts disappointing outcomes for clients as well as law firms. A summary of who objects and why leaves out that conclusion.
- ECorrect
This gives us the judgment we predicted. Many people have joined, but lasting benefits remain doubtful. The first sentence of the final paragraph states the concern about “long-term client satisfaction” and significantly higher law-firm profits (paragraph 3), and the rest explains it.
