- Section 1, Question 23
The proponents of the Modern Movement in architecture(451 more words not shown)
With respect to the proponents(14 more words not shown)
Reading the passage
I've been describing the proponents as stubborn: they stick to their ideals despite the practical difficulties. But the question asks how the writer regards them. That description gives us a negative direction; now we need the word that fits the writer's tone.
Working the answers
- A
Forbearing means patient or tolerant. The writer points out their rigidity and its consequences rather than patiently excusing their conduct.
- B
Defensive would suggest the writer is protecting them against criticism. Here the writer is making the criticism, not defending their position.
- CCorrect
Unimpressed fits the account of an ideology that conflicts with reality and proponents unwilling to adjust. The writer exposes the shortcomings in their claims and judgment without expressing admiration.
- D
Exasperated adds intense irritation or frustration. The writer's critical explanation doesn't display that stronger emotional response. We don't need to infer exasperation simply because the criticism is clear.
- E
Indifferent would mean the writer shows little concern or judgment. Calling their limitations unnecessary and linking their inflexibility to decline plainly evaluates them.
