Reading the passage

We know NGF belongs to a larger group of chemicals, but the detailed account stays with NGF. This is another open support question. A claim about other factors still needs support; we can't assume that everything true of NGF is true of them.

Working the answers

  • A

The experimental effects are attributed to the protein identified as NGF. No part of those effects is assigned to another factor.

  • B

We aren't told how thoroughly other factors are understood compared with NGF. More thoroughly here makes that comparison; it doesn't merely mean knowledge of the other factors has improved over time.

  • C

We learn that other factors were found, not that Levi-Montalcini identified them during these decades.

  • D
    Correct

The opening describes neurotrophic factors broadly as regulating survival and some specialized functions. We then get specific roles for NGF, the first of many such factors, but no comparable account of what the other factors do. D recognizes those unspecified functions.

This needn't mean the other factors have entirely different functions from NGF. That was the sticking point in trying to connect the answer with the text: not specifically identified is not the same as different. Nor are we moving that modifier onto the unnamed factors. It is their functions that the account doesn't spell out.

  • E

The other factors' existence doesn't establish that they cause the same effects seen in the chick-embryo experiment. That additional claim isn't supplied.
