Reading the passage
Why call borrowing “old news”? To say that borrowing by itself isn't surprising. The English speech immediately before this line might catch our attention: using English doesn't establish that a tribal culture is disappearing.
What we’re looking for
But don't stop at that one example. The paragraph also mentions dances shared across tribes. We need an answer broad enough to cover that borrowing too.
Working the answers
- ACorrect
Shared practices at powwows are unsurprising because cultural borrowing is familiar. The next sentence tells us what does matter: the “conscious distinction” between tribal and intertribal practices. People are borrowing without simply abandoning their separate identities.
- B
Unsurprising doesn't mean unavoidable. We aren't told that Native Americans have no choice but to use English, or that we should accept its use for that reason.
- C
Borrowing is called old news. The conscious distinction between traditional and intertribal practices is called important. Those are different observations; we aren't told how long people have deliberately made that distinction.
- D
The sentence doesn't explain what caused the recent increase in intertribal activity. And borrowing among Native American tribes is different from borrowing from non-Native cultures, such as using English.
- E
We aren't being told where the powwow came from. The paragraph examines what its current mix of practices tells us about identity.
