Reading the passage

Map the movement of each account before trying to name its structure. A begins with detective fiction and its suspicious reader, then broadens to the reader's role in literature and the nature of genres. B begins with a general problem in genre classification, proposes reading protocols, and then illustrates them with poetry and science fiction.

What we’re looking for

Those are the actual steps an answer must describe. If a choice claims there is a contradiction, counterexample, or thought experiment, we should be able to identify it.

Working the answers

  • A
    Correct

A moves from the specific example of detective fiction to general claims about literature and genres. B moves from a general account of genre and reading protocols to specific examples of how poetry and science fiction are read. We can point to both movements in the text.

  • B

A doesn't open with a competing view. It introduces Borges's view, which the author accepts and develops. That already defeats the comparison.

  • C

A doesn't respond to a series of counterexamples. Its detective-fiction example illustrates the broader idea. B's poetry and science-fiction examples likewise illustrate its proposed approach rather than challenge its thesis.

  • D

Neither opening presents an apparent contradiction. B raises a classification problem, but difficulty deciding where a work belongs isn't itself a contradiction.

  • E

There is no opening thought experiment in either account. Describing a type of reader or a problem with genre boundaries is not the same as setting up an imagined experiment and exploring its results.
