Reading the passage
Stay with the second paragraph. It connects regional differences in dental reduction with differences in when improved cooking technology was adopted. It also raises the possibility that boiling was a later modification, following an earlier adoption of cooking. That is a history with developments within cooking, not simply a switch from no cooking to cooking.
Working the answers
- A
The reduction around 100,000 years ago is discussed, but so is a possible earlier reduction about 1.9 million years ago. “Only” excludes the earlier possibility that the authors expressly consider.
- B
The paragraph concerns cooking techniques and tooth and jaw size. It does not say adaptation to cooked food prevents a high-meat diet. A diet can contain a great deal of meat and still be cooked; raw versus cooked is not the same distinction as low versus high meat.
- C
The difficulty of reconstructing soft digestive tissues is discussed in the third paragraph. This broad claim about our understanding does not capture what the second paragraph suggests about cooking methods. The location specified in the question matters.
- DCorrect
The authors refer to “improvements in cooking technology” and to later modifications such as boiling. Those statements directly support change and improvement over evolutionary time. Boiling illustrates a development in how food was cooked, not merely the existence of cooking.
- E
The paragraph describes regional variation in when improvements were adopted. It does not give a single date when geographically diverse populations all began cooking. A shared practice does not establish simultaneous adoption.
