Reading the passage
We've already predicted the main point: asking witnesses to close their eyes appears to give us the recall benefit we want without the difficulties of the other methods. The cognitive interview and hypnosis establish the problems; eye closure is the proposed solution.
What we’re looking for
So we want an answer about both the benefit and its practicality. Merely listing the qualities of an ideal interview would stop before the writer's most important claim: research suggests that such a method is available.
Working the answers
- A
These are the criteria introduced at the beginning of the final paragraph. They help us understand why eye closure is promising, but this answer never says that the technique meets them. It leaves out the solution.
- B
The older methods do present trade-offs. But “all existing interview procedures” includes eye closure, which the ending presents as a way to obtain the recall benefit without those sacrifices. This describes the problem as though the proposed solution never arrived.
- C
True, but being a shared component doesn't explain why eye closure deserves attention. The central result is that this component alone appears as effective as the more demanding cognitive interview.
- D
The cognitive interview isn't established as the most effective option. Eye closure appears to offer an equivalent recall benefit, and the writer favors its practical advantages. This elevates the method used for comparison into the main recommendation.
- ECorrect
This captures the solution we predicted. Better recall, no increase in errors, and no specialist training explain why instructed eye closure fits the writer's criteria for an ideal technique.
