Reading the passage
The cognitive interview is a package of techniques; eye closure is one component of that package. The important finding is that the component by itself appears to produce an equivalent recall benefit.
What we’re looking for
So the relationship is more specific than “a complicated method versus a simple method.” We need several things used together, one of those same things used alone, and a comparable result. If removing the other components made the result worse, we would lose the finding that makes eye closure so appealing.
Working the answers
- A
Light exercise done often and strenuous exercise done less often are two different exercise schedules. Neither is presented as one component taken out of the other schedule. Similar health benefits alone don't give us the package-and-component relationship.
- BCorrect
Reducing saturated fat and increasing fiber together correspond to the full cognitive interview. Increasing fiber alone corresponds to eye closure alone. Both approaches produce equivalent benefits, just as the single interview component appears to match the recall benefit of the whole package. Each important part of the relationship has a counterpart.
- C
Moderate versus excessive caffeine compares different amounts of the same substance and different effects. It doesn't compare a combination with one component that preserves the combination's benefit.
- D
Testing a supplement in women and men compares populations. We aren't removing components of a method, and the results for the second population aren't even conclusive.
- E
This gets close: diet plus exercise is a package, and exercise alone is one component. But the benefit becomes less significant when diet is removed. The eye-closure finding is that the benefit appears equivalent, not diminished. That difference is decisive.
