Reading the passage

Keep our reaction separate from the author's. We might personally prefer an easy, predictable camera, but the account explains why these artists want something else. The last paragraph emphasizes one-of-a-kind results, the mark of the artist's encounter with particular circumstances, and the possibility of recovered intimacy.

What we’re looking for

That sounds understanding and appreciative. It is more than a bare list of obsolete methods, but it is not a declaration that modern technology should be rejected.

Working the answers

  • A

The author identifies artistic benefits rather than repeatedly doubting whether the methods have any value. The explanation of uniqueness and intimacy points away from doubtful hesitation.

  • B
    Correct

The account makes the artists' goals intelligible and recognizes the qualities they seek. The final paragraph provides the clearest evidence for this appreciative attitude.

  • C

There is irony in the revival's timing, but the author does not treat the artists as amusing for using obsolete techniques. Explaining an ironic situation is different from mocking the people in it.

  • D

This turns appreciation of particular effects into enthusiastic endorsement of a critique of modern technology. The account can acknowledge mass media's loss of intimacy without taking that stronger position.

  • E

The author is not mainly fascinated by the technical workings of these processes. The focus is why their effects appeal to artists, not wonder at how the chemistry or equipment operates.
