Reading the passage
We've already predicted the central point: artists are reviving old photographic methods because they value distinctive effects, uncertainty, and intimacy. The opening photographers make that development concrete; the later paragraphs explain its motivations.
What we’re looking for
The purpose should capture that whole account. Mentioning a technique does not make this a technical manual, and explaining why artists value it does not automatically make the author an advocate urging everyone to use it.
Working the answers
- A
The account acknowledges aesthetic value, but its primary job is to describe a revival and explain its appeal. Making a case for the processes' value alone narrows that broader account into an argument for them.
- B
This is tempting because techniques are named and some features are explained. But details of how the processes are used would make their operation the central subject. We do not learn how to make these photographs step by step; we learn why artists are returning to the methods.
- CCorrect
The surprising development is the revival of old techniques while photography moves toward digital technology. The examples, historical explanation, and discussion of artistic goals all develop that account.
- D
No awards, critical reviews, or public acclaim are described. Artistic motivations are not the same thing as the reception the artists' work receives.
- E
Bidaut and Estabrook have different interests, but their comparison does not organize the whole account. They illustrate a broader movement that the remaining paragraphs examine.
