Reading the passage
Read the opening phrase together with the rest of its sentence: photography is approaching a digital revolution, yet it is moving forward into its past. That is the contrast. Just when new technology seems to offer the next step, artists are returning to much older techniques.
What we’re looking for
The phrase supplies the circumstances that make the revival surprising. It does not, by itself, tell us that photographers fear new technology or that the author disapproves of their choices.
Working the answers
- ACorrect
The digital advance makes the backward-looking revival ironic. The contrast helps introduce a movement in which old processes are used to create new expressive effects.
- B
A return to old methods by these artists does not establish that most photographers are wary of advanced ones. Their artistic reasons are discussed later; fear of technology is not one of them.
- C
The author explains why artists value the old methods. The opening contrast does not express skepticism that their work has merit.
- D
We are not given most artistic photographers' assessment of digital technology. Valuing an older process for a particular effect does not mean finding little merit in the newer alternative.
- E
Nothing in the phrase predicts how long the revival will last. A surprising trend need not be a temporary fad.
