Reading the passage
The artists choose older methods partly because the results are irregular and unpredictable. Those features can create a desired artistic effect. So we want more than someone using an old thing: we want someone choosing an old production method for the aesthetic character it gives the result.
What we’re looking for
A preference for an old record player might remind us of that general idea, but age alone would not complete the analogy. The reason for the choice matters.
Working the answers
- A
The researcher is testing whether traditional remedies can cure a condition. That is an inquiry into medical effectiveness, not a choice of an irregular artistic effect.
- B
The architect gets inspiration from ancient styles, but the answer does not say the building is made using an old technique to obtain its distinctive physical results. Borrowing a design idea supplies only part of the relationship.
- C
This engineer selects an older design, but it is described as highly efficient. We are not told that its irregularities create a desired aesthetic effect. An old design is not automatically inferior, and its age alone does not make this the best match.
- DCorrect
The old-fashioned loom corresponds to the old photographic process, and the irregular fabric texture corresponds to the distinctive imperfections in the photographs. In each case, the artist wants an effect produced by the older method itself.
- E
The artist borrows old imagery but uses a modern computer program to reproduce it. That differs from choosing an old production process for the unpredictable qualities it introduces.
