Reading the passage

The chronology helps here. The union had gained international recognition through the grape boycott by 1965. The Teatro Campesino's development came afterward in the account: Valdez approached Chávez that year and gathered the striking workers in the fall.

What we’re looking for

That makes it hard to credit the theater with a major role in the union's earliest efforts to gain recognition. A group cannot drive an earlier effort before it has formed. Keep that limited timing inference separate from guesses about how audiences later received its work.

Working the answers

  • A

We aren't told that farm owners accepted the theater's organizing efforts. The union's boycott and the theater are related, but an account of one doesn't establish owners' responses to the other.

  • B

Valdez's former membership in the Mime Troupe is stated. Similar membership by other Teatro participants is not. His background cannot stand in for everyone else's.

  • C
    Correct

The opening places the union's international recognition before the account of the Teatro's formation. That supports the limited claim about the earliest efforts; it doesn't deny that the theater later contributed to organizing.

  • D

Neither the language of the first performances nor a later change to English is described. An audience's background is not enough to establish this performance history.

  • E

We hear about historians' accounts of the Teatro, not favorable reviews from critics in two countries. Possible praise is not evidence that it occurred.
