Reading the passage

The grape boycott gives us the political setting in which the actos developed. Workers were trying to organize and improve their position, and the sketches later drew on their experiences on the picket lines.

What we’re looking for

So calling this background is a start, but we can be more specific: it helps explain why the workers wanted political theater and what they put into it. A detail can serve that supporting role without being the main point itself.

Working the answers

  • A
    Correct

The organizing effort supplies a motivation for using theater: encouraging social action. It also helps explain the subject matter, including strikes and ridicule of strikebreakers. Both parts connect the opening history to the sketches described afterward.

  • B

The boycott is not presented as an obstacle to public acceptance of the theater. The labor struggle supplied circumstances and material for the actos; nothing says Valdez had to overcome the boycott to gain an audience.

  • C

We aren't hearing an objection or a response to one. This sentence reports an event that establishes the setting before the author develops the account of political theater.

  • D

The author does not say scholars studied the boycott at the expense of theater history. Discussing a historical event isn't evidence of that criticism.

  • E

This sentence describes Chávez's union activity. It does not explain why historians later credited Valdez individually with inventing actos. That attribution problem arises in the final paragraph.
