Reading the passage
Put the recommended neighborhood on the map. Instead of widely separated homes and destinations, we would have corner groceries and small neighborhood schools within walking distance of residents. Repeating that arrangement across new subdivisions suggests more local groceries and schools relative to the number of people served.
What we’re looking for
We don't need to assume that every existing suburb lacks stores or schools. The contrast concerns how numerous, local, and accessible these destinations would be.
Working the answers
- A
Nothing eliminates the need to consider traffic in zoning. Narrower streets and less dependence on driving are still design choices that may require planning.
- B
The recommendation includes a range of housing prices, not a lower percentage of buildings containing multiple apartments. Price diversity doesn't establish a particular change in building type.
- C
The aim is to bring everyday destinations closer to residents. We have no basis for predicting that people would spend more time traveling to a central business district for work and shopping.
- D
Neighborhood redesign doesn't eliminate the need for coordination between city and suburban zoning authorities. No such administrative consequence is discussed.
- ECorrect
Small schools and corner groceries distributed through walkable neighborhoods support the prediction of more of them per resident. The answer follows from the proposed arrangement of services. It doesn't require a claim that every resident will use every nearby business or that the plan will solve all community problems.
