Reading the passage
Look at what Valdez did as well as what he said. He recruited striking farm workers, drew on their personal experiences and basic improvisations, and guided that material into a successful theatrical form. That gives us a basis for inferring what he thought people could bring to a performance.
What we’re looking for
We also know that he wanted theater to suggest solutions and inspire social action. His views should fit that practice, rather than introduce an opinion about an unrelated theatrical movement.
Working the answers
- A
The carpas connection comes through Broyles-González's account. Valdez is never quoted or described as rejecting carpas as an unsuitable model. Their influence doesn't establish his personal evaluation of them.
- B
We hear that he approached Chávez, not that he thought Chávez had failed to give enough support. No complaint of that kind appears.
- C
There is no stated judgment by Valdez that European avant-garde theater is irrelevant to working-class audiences. His own academic training is part of the background, not evidence for this rejection.
- DCorrect
His use of the workers' existing improvisational talent supports the view that formal actor training isn't necessary for effective theater. This is an inference from how he developed the actos; the text does not explicitly list every worker's training history.
- E
Valdez connects theatrical work to political effects: an acto should inspire social action. That cuts against evaluating its artistic aspects independently of those effects.
