Reading the passage

Find Gould's result in each account. In A, foragers send bees to locations the foragers have not visited. In B, trained foragers really have visited food in a lake, but their nestmates ignore the directions.

What we’re looking for

Those results tell us that a forager's personal visit is neither required for successful recruitment nor enough to guarantee it. Look for a choice that preserves both findings without inventing a new explanation for the bees' behavior.

Working the answers

  • A

A's study undermines the need for an odor carried from the destination. B attributes the refusal to the unlikely lake location, not a missing odor. Neither says that the bees then choose their own alternative destinations.

  • B

The trained bees do communicate a location in a lake, where pollinating flowers would not normally grow. The nestmates ignore them, but that is different from the foragers refusing to dispatch them. This mixes up the bees sending the message with those receiving it.

  • C

Neither study compares experienced and inexperienced foragers or ranks their food discoveries. The restriction to only experienced bees has no support.

  • D
    Correct

The first half restates A's unvisited-site result; the second restates B's visited-lake result. Together they capture why visiting a place and successfully recruiting other bees to it are different matters.

  • E

B mentions trails as a form of ant communication. Gould's bees communicate through dances; no trail from the food source to their nest is described.
