Reading the passage

The middle paragraphs give us two caricatures: science is only material mechanisms, and humanities is useless daydreaming. The final paragraph says both are mistaken and offers scientific humanism as a better way for the fields to work together.

What we’re looking for

The question asks for one function of that paragraph. An answer needn't include every sentence's job, but it must describe something the paragraph actually does.

Working the answers

  • A

The opening does propose reconciliation. The ending supports its possibility rather than showing it to be implausible.

  • B

The author calls these views misconceptions, not correct accounts that merely need reconciliation. Their inaccuracy is precisely why correction is needed.

  • C

The author doesn't choose one caricature over the other. Both are replaced with an account that recognizes shared goals and useful methods.

  • D
    Correct

Scientific humanism is the alternative: combine a scientific attitude with concern for human values instead of maintaining those distorted pictures of the opposing field. That is a clear function of the final paragraph.

  • E

We don't get specific cases illustrating those caricatures. We get a proposed correction and an explanation of the disciplines' common ground.
