Reading the passage

We need the mistaken picture held by some humanists. They reduce science to the measurable material world and believe it misses essential human values. Don't switch to the author's own, broader view of what science can do.

Working the answers

  • A

This isn't the misunderstanding described. The humanists claim that some aspects of the mind cannot be adequately explained by science; that isn't the same as science encouraging a belief that emotions cannot be explained at all.

  • B

This allows science to serve needs beyond its practical origins. It doesn't express the narrow, material-only picture the author criticizes, and we aren't given this account of its origins.

  • C
    Correct

“Exclusively” makes the restriction clear: nothing beyond measurable data counts. The final paragraph directly rejects that restriction, saying science draws on more than information that can be measured (paragraph 4). That is the misunderstanding we're looking for.

  • D

The humanists accuse science of missing the spiritual element, not of recognizing it and declaring the arts inexplicable.

  • E

The criticized view is that science ignores or explains away important human values. Encouraging their description doesn't capture that alleged neglect.
