Reading the passage

Self-similarity means the part resembles the whole at a smaller scale. We need the one example that fails to give us that relationship. Four answers will describe a smaller piece looking like the larger object it belongs to.

Working the answers

  • A

The branch is part of the tree, and it looks like the tree. That fits, so eliminate it on this EXCEPT question.

  • B

Each small portion of the frost resembles the entire pattern. That's the required part-to-whole relationship.

  • C

The blood-vessel pattern in one part of the body resembles the pattern across the whole body. Again, smaller part to larger whole.

  • D
    Correct

These are seeds from different maple subspecies that resemble one another. We aren't zooming in on part of one object and finding the larger object's pattern repeated. Similar shapes at different sizes aren't enough when they're simply separate objects being compared.

  • E

A floret is part of the cauliflower head and resembles the whole head. That illustrates self-similarity, so it isn't the exception.
