Reading the passage

Watch the NOT. We need something both accounts suggest Cather would avoid. A gives us the narrow overlap with B: she doesn't directly explain her characters' emotions. She lets us infer what is happening inside them from what we see outside.

Working the answers

  • A

Setting is explicitly part of A's account, and B mentions Cather's treatment of landscape. A revealing chair or other selected detail is compatible with the technique.

  • B

B describes unusual treatment of narrative time as one of her features. That gives us no reason to exclude a nonchronological plot; A doesn't establish that exclusion either.

  • C

A expressly discusses selected details of appearance and action. Such details can reveal a character without directly explaining the character's thoughts.

  • D

Neither account says she avoids dialogue or quotation marks. Directly quoting speech isn't the same as directly narrating someone's private thoughts.

  • E
    Correct

This tells us the character's inner thoughts, anxieties, and wishes outright. A says she conveys emotional reality through behavior rather than depicting emotions directly, and B contrasts her indirect technique with the realistic novel's direct psychological characterization. E is the feature both accounts give us reason to exclude.
