Reading the passage
This is a broad question about what the author would accept. We know the author thinks the disciplines share a goal and can benefit from cooperation. We can use that as a starting point, but each particular claim still needs support.
Working the answers
- A
Both disciplines already “attempt to describe and explain.” Scientific humanism isn't introducing those activities into humanities from a field that alone possessed them.
- B
The final paragraph says their objectives remain the same, including understanding people. Scientists already share this goal; it isn't something they have yet to adopt.
- C
The author says humanities can profit from controlled evaluation. Nothing singles out aesthetic experience as a case in which controlled measures are of little use. Mentioning art doesn't establish that unfavorable judgment about evaluating it.
- DCorrect
The author expressly says that the humanities benefit from efforts to assess their subjects systematically (paragraph 4). D describes that benefit in broader terms: humanists gain from an approach associated with scientific inquiry. Profit here means benefit, not financial earnings.
- E
The pessimistic statement at the end has a condition: continued misunderstanding. The author also says cooperation is possible, even probable, if we focus on common goals. E removes that qualification and substitutes an unsupported general forecast.
