Reading the passage
We're evaluating criticisms of Victorian philanthropy. Calling this a defense of the philanthropists gets part of it, but the writer first lays out two objections, then examines the historical assumptions behind them and explains why the resulting picture is unfair. Keep that whole job in mind when translating the choices' more abstract language.
Working the answers
- A
Philanthropy is briefly defined in the opening, but the rest of the discussion evaluates criticism of it. It isn't an extended explanation of what the term means.
- B
If the theorists are the modern critics, their work is challenged, not defended. The philanthropists who receive a defense aren't presented as theorists.
- C
The writer doesn't trace how philanthropy developed over time. The historical practice is the subject of later judgments, and those judgments are what we examine.
- DCorrect
The “modern evaluations” are the criticisms that philanthropy was inadequate or self-serving. The “historical phenomenon” is Victorian philanthropy. Examining those evaluations includes identifying their bias and explaining what they overlook.
- E
Unemployment helps illustrate the first criticism, but the discussion doesn't analyze a particular decision or dilemma faced by workers. It evaluates judgments about the philanthropists.
