Reading the passage
We've already predicted the main point: the court allowed these educational copies even though the shop earned a profit. It treated the owner as selling a copying service, rather than illegally exploiting the readings.
What we’re looking for
Now we're looking for some version of that ruling and its reasoning. The wording can differ from ours; it still needs to capture the central idea.
Working the answers
- ACorrect
This gives us a version of the ruling we predicted. It emphasizes the copying technology more than our wording did, but that fits the court's reasoning: the final paragraph describes the business as exploiting “professional copying technologies,” not the copyrighted material itself.
- B
The court protects the shop's act of copying in this case; it doesn't grant the course packs a copyright of their own. B blurs those different ideas. The per-page price helps explain why the copying was allowed, but it doesn't make B an accurate statement of the ruling.
- C
These are factors used to assess the copying, not the court's conclusion about this shop. Listing those factors leaves out the main point: why the court allowed this particular use.
- D
Losing this case doesn't mean the publishers lost the right to sue. The court rejected their claim here; it didn't prohibit them from bringing cases against copy shops. D replaces the actual ruling with a different one.
- E
This gives us a general rule with a no-substantial-profit condition that the court never states. The owner was allowed to profit; the court focused on how he earned that money. E doesn't capture the ruling in this case.
