Reading the passage

Make a simple map before looking at the abstract labels. We begin with Victorian philanthropy and hear two criticisms: it was inadequate, and it was self-serving. Then the writer turns on the critics, arguing that their way of judging the past gives an unfair picture. So we're looking for two criticisms followed by a shared response to them.

Working the answers

  • A
    Correct

The two related positions are the claims of inadequacy and self-interest. Both are then challenged for assuming the superiority of later state-managed charity and patronizing the Victorians. That is the common criticism directed at the two positions.

  • B

The two criticisms don't oppose each other; both attack Victorian philanthropy for different reasons. The ending challenges them rather than combining them into a new theory.

  • C

Victorian philanthropy is a historical practice, not a position asserted at the beginning. This also leaves out the writer's response to the two evaluations.

  • D

We hear two criticisms and a reply, not three examples demonstrating the same logical inconsistency.

  • E

The first two paragraphs present different criticisms of philanthropy. They aren't two examples offered to support a single theory.
