Reading the passage
More women gained education, but they were still barred from the subjects that prepared people for public life. The pattern is expanded access with a limit on how far the newly included group can go. We need both parts of that relationship.
Working the answers
- A
New voters gain access, but manipulation undermines the whole election process. Our example places particular restrictions on women's education while men retain access to the fuller curriculum. The scope of the setback doesn't match.
- B
More people can afford the product, but fewer products are available. That's a shortage affecting access, not admission to a system with a ceiling on the new participants' advancement.
- CCorrect
More workers enter the industry, but they can't rise above a certain level. Entry improves while further advancement remains restricted, just as more women receive education while being denied dialectic and rhetoric. This matches the relationship we predicted.
- D
More aggressive opponents are different from rules limiting what the newcomers can do. The account doesn't blame increased competition from male students for women's restricted curriculum.
- E
A technology becoming harder to master isn't a prohibition on who may master it. Women's limits came from the roles assigned to them and the subjects withheld, not simply from advanced work becoming more difficult.
