Reading the passage

We've already predicted the main point: women gained access to education, but it came with restrictions that complicate the earlier picture of liberty and equality. They weren't getting the same preparation for public life as men. Look for an answer that captures that pattern, even if it states the point differently.

Working the answers

  • A

The opening sounds promising, but the ending adds a comparison we never established. We aren't told fewer women were educated than in medieval times. Wider access can coexist with restrictions; criticizing those restrictions doesn't deny the expansion.

  • B
    Correct

This sharpens our prediction by explaining the pattern. Men were prepared for public service and debate; women were expected to pursue private enjoyment and teach young children. Their different curricula reflected those expected uses of education. That's why women were denied the subjects needed for public roles.

  • C

The literary achievements are real—the ending lists translations, poetry, tales, and other works. The problem is the claim that their education didn't prepare them for literature. Literary and grammatical studies were precisely what women were permitted to study.

  • D

The relevant division is within the language arts: women could study grammar but were excluded from dialectic and rhetoric. Dividing all language arts from the other liberal arts isn't the explanation given.

  • E

The shared beginning is true, but it leaves out the restrictions and expected roles that explain the later divergence. A common starting point isn't the central point about women's opportunities.
