Reading the passage

These are the contemporary writers, so look at the ending. Their roots are European, while their horizon is the Americas. They still venture outward and return to their origins; the writer calls this a daily challenge. We need a statement that fits that continuing pull.

Working the answers

  • A
    Correct

The reference to a daily challenge supports continuing influence from both tendencies (paragraph 4). The public sphere and the return to origins are the outward and inward movements we've been tracking, even where the labels aren't repeated.

  • B

We aren't given the number of works in either mode. An ongoing tension doesn't tell us which currently produces more writing.

  • C

They haven't escaped the tension. The final paragraph describes it as something they confront now, not just something previous generations experienced.

  • D

Having to reconcile two approaches doesn't mean doubting whether they help. The ending gives each a benefit: looking outward helps writers appreciate their culture; returning protects against disappearing into the mainstream.

  • E

The ending places writers between the influences rather than sorting them into separate camps. An individual can experience both pulls. “Cleanly” concerns distinct groups, not whether they happen to contain equal numbers.
