Reading the passage

Can the predator tell where one animal ends and another begins? When the school compacts, its senses may be unable to “resolve individuals.” I'd replace resolve with identify separately or tell apart.

Working the answers

  • A

Control means having power over them. The problem concerns what the predator can identify.

  • B

Answer might fit resolving a question, but these individuals aren't questions to be answered.

  • C

Reconcile means settle a conflict or make things consistent. That doesn't fit the sensory problem.

  • D
    Correct

Distinguish means tell apart. The compact group makes it harder to pick out individual animals.

  • E

Pacify means calm or make peaceful. The predator isn't trying to calm these animals; it's trying to distinguish them.
