Reading the passage

Women weren't expected to prepare for public life. Their education was directed toward private enjoyment and teaching young children, and unusually learned women didn't have clear social roles available to them. Those are the relevant limits to keep in view. This open inference question could pick up on any of them.

Working the answers

  • A

Teaching very young children is mentioned; providing advanced grammar training isn't. We can't turn that limited expected role into an important role in advanced instruction.

  • B

Some Italian women did give speeches, but the text qualifies them as ceremonial rather than intended to influence public affairs. That exception doesn't establish a trend toward greater acceptance of women as orators.

  • C

This places the split too early. “All students” progressed to stylistics and literary criticism. The exclusion concerns dialectic and rhetoric, not the start of those shared studies.

  • D

Women achieved literary success, but nothing says the acclaimed writers succeeded by studying subjects outside the usual female curriculum. Their achievements could fit the literary education already described.

  • E
    Correct

Exceptionally learned women were labeled “preternatural or essentially masculine,” or praised only if they kept their accomplishments private. They were treated as outside ordinary expectations for women, rather than as examples other women should follow. That is the sense in which they were regarded as anomalies.
