Reading the passage
We've already predicted that Hispanic-American writers are pulled between cosmopolitanism and nativism. Looking outward and returning to their own culture both matter. Our first way of putting it might be that writers should find a balance.
What we’re looking for
Now check the answers against the whole discussion. We may need to refine that prediction rather than insist on our wording.
Working the answers
- A
Shared Spanish connects these writers to Europe, but that's just the starting point. A leaves out their effort to gain literary independence and the two conflicting approaches to it.
- BCorrect
This adds something our initial prediction could miss: independence from Spain is the goal that introduces both approaches. Borrowing from other literatures and returning to local voices are two ways of pursuing it, and paragraph 3 shows them taking turns dominating. B describes that history rather than turning the ending into a new prescription.
- C
We aren't given this sequence within individual careers. Changes across historical periods don't show that each novelist starts with European influences and later switches to Hispanic-American settings.
- D
The text calls them “often conflicting tactics” and explains how one or the other predominates. Trying to reconcile them doesn't mean they never compete.
- E
Reconciliation is discussed, but achieving literature's full potential and ending isolation between writers are added claims. Those aren't the stated stakes of the argument.
