Reading the passage
I'd summarize the three paragraphs as evidence and timeline, proposed explanation, possible weakness. Lowe first reconstructs when the collapse happened, then explains why he thinks it happened. Finally, the writer asks whether the surviving record gives us an accurate picture in the first place.
Working the answers
- A
The ending doesn't simply draw a conclusion from the evidence. It questions the foundation of Lowe's account. His explanation of the collapse comes in the middle.
- B
The hypothesis isn't simply affirmed at the end. We finish with a warning that better evidence might radically change our understanding.
- C
No contradictory evidence has been found here. Continued occupation after monument construction stopped is a possible future discovery. A finding that could challenge Lowe isn't evidence already obtained.
- DCorrect
Paragraph 1 describes the study's basis in the “known archaeological record.” Paragraph 2 presents the theory that fits that evidence. Paragraph 3 raises a possible fundamental weakness and examines whether the record supporting the study accurately reflects events. All three steps fit.
- E
This also claims that contradictions in the evidence are discussed. The writer raises uncertainty about the record and imagines a discovery that could challenge an assumption; no actual conflicting findings are presented.
