Reading the passage
What did we actually learn about West Coast cool? The New York apartment group's work was its “seedbed.” That gives us its roots. Be careful about borrowing details from Davis's later bands: he moves on from these innovations rather than following them up himself.
Working the answers
- A
Helping start something and making it popular are different jobs. The group laid the groundwork, but we aren't told Davis brought the resulting style to a broad audience.
- B
The “unified and integrated sound” describes his late-1950s work, not West Coast cool.
- C
The New York group gave ensemble playing at least as much attention as solos. That doesn't tell us West Coast cool was played mainly by large ensembles. It changes both which music we're describing and what the detail establishes: playing together doesn't tell us the group's size.
- D
Chord changes belong to the later band's innovations. Even there, the point is breaking free from a repeating pattern, not introducing many different patterns into West Coast cool.
- ECorrect
The group that met in New York “became the seedbed” for the style. Growing out of innovations developed there says just that, without adding the unsupported claim that Davis popularized it.
