Reading the passage
The lawyers are closing ranks against outsiders at the expense of disciplining their own members. Predict colleagues protecting one another when they should be dealing with misconduct.
Working the answers
- A
This does show colleagues defending one another, so it's worth considering. But the teachers think the accusation is false. Defending someone they believe is innocent misses the tradeoff here: protecting the profession while leaving wrongdoing unaddressed.
- BCorrect
The journalist conceals a colleague's distortions to protect the press from a hostile public. That matches both the outside pressure and the sacrifice of accountability. The lawyers’ solidarity similarly increased while ethical enforcement suffered (paragraph 5).
- C
This is cooperation for an environmental cause. Nobody is covering for a colleague's misconduct.
- D
Misconduct is being overlooked, but the government official and pharmaceutical manufacturer aren't colleagues protecting their own profession. This misses the professional relationship behind the lawyers' response.
- E
Campaigning for a party colleague is mutual support, but there's no misconduct to conceal. Simply helping someone in your group doesn't reproduce the conflict between defending the group and enforcing its standards.
