Maybe there were few disciplinary cases because the lawyers behaved well. But then why were church authorities themselves complaining about misconduct? The Council of Basel is evidence against that reassuring explanation.

Working the answers

  • A

The council identifies failures to follow existing standards. Its role here isn't to show how new standards should be established.

  • B

The English complaints are described as “similar complaints.” They reinforce the council's concern rather than contrast with it.

  • C
    Correct

The council said lawyers violated established ethical rules (paragraph 4). Even church authorities acknowledged violations. That supports the argument that rare discipline reflected weak enforcement, not an absence of misconduct.

  • D

Mentioning the existing papal constitutions doesn't explain how the rules were created. The example concerns lawyers failing to obey them.

  • E

A cardinal is directed to address the problem, but we aren't shown a disciplinary system being developed. We're given evidence of failures within the existing one.
