Reading the passage
Problems, more problems, then a proposed solution. Paragraph 1 explains the difficulties created by reliance on Earth. Paragraph 2 adds the limits and risks of a short stay. Paragraph 3 changes the assumptions and explains how preparing Mars in advance helps.
Working the answers
- A
Preparing a habitat and supplies on Mars is a major change to the approach, not a minor adjustment to details of the existing plan.
- B
The author explains the conventional plan's drawbacks and the alternative's benefits. We don't get an analysis of both merits and demerits of both plans; the alternative's disadvantages aren't examined.
- C
The alternative is presented favorably, not ultimately rejected.
- DCorrect
The difficulties include fuel transport, limited research time, and long transit. Preparing the destination changes the assumption that the crew must carry everything from Earth. The final paragraph explains how that change addresses those difficulties.
- E
The old plan's weaknesses are contrasted with the new plan's strengths. Calling both sets of features strengths changes the organization.
