Reading the passage
We've already predicted the main point: preparing a habitat and supplies on Mars gets around several problems with the conventional plan. The first two paragraphs show why depending on Earth makes the trip difficult; the last shows how a different approach helps. We're looking for some version of that problem-and-solution claim.
Working the answers
- A
A mission might still be expensive and risky, but the conclusion emphasizes what the alternative improves. This turns the discussion into a warning about every possible plan and leaves out the solution.
- B
Carrying over assumptions from lunar exploration is part of the initial problem. It doesn't capture the alternative that the final paragraph presents to address it.
- CCorrect
The new plan “surmounts many of these obstacles.” The habitat, supplies, and fuel module reduce dependence on Earth, allowing a longer stay with more exploration and less transit time. This captures the proposed improvement without claiming that all problems disappear.
- D
Solving these logistical problems doesn't establish that the proposal would be easier to execute than every plan involving an orbital platform. Neither that broad comparison nor ease of execution is the main claim.
- E
Fuel is one problem alongside restricted research time and prolonged exposure during flight. The point is how the alternative addresses several problems, not which single obstacle is greatest.
