Reading the passage
Jackson reserves authentic depiction for Black writers. A strong challenge would be a good, authentic portrayal by someone outside that group. That would show that ethnicity doesn't draw the boundary he thinks it does. We need evidence about who can produce the writing, not simply another work discussing race.
Working the answers
- A
Previously living in the United States doesn't make these writers non-Black or show that they lack the relevant experience.
- B
Plagiarism would help explain apparent success by non-Black writers without crediting them with the necessary insight: they copied Black poets. That goes in the wrong direction.
- C
Black writers learning from other Black writers is compatible with a distinctive tradition. It doesn't supply an authentic contribution from outside the group.
- D
Integration is a topic. We're not told whether these works are authentic portrayals or whether their writers fall outside Jackson's preferred group.
- ECorrect
Jackson already treats these poems as authentic, but their actual authors are non-Black. The works haven't changed; the attribution has. His own judgment now recognizes the quality his ethnicity-based approach reserves for Black writers.
