Reading the passage
What would stop this arrangement from working? My first thought is a problem with making fuel on Mars or getting the equipment there. The plan relies on supplies being ready when the crew arrives, so a failure in that preparation could hurt it.
What we’re looking for
We're looking for the strongest reason against favoring this alternative. A choice can challenge another part of the plan even if it doesn't match our first prediction.
Working the answers
- A
Large funding requirements for long space flights apply broadly. They don't give us a reason to prefer the conventional approach over this alternative.
- B
This initially looks promising: the fuel module matters. But not yet fully developed doesn't tell us that the necessary technology cannot be ready for the mission. It leaves open how much work remains and whether the required function can be achieved.
- C
More total fuel is a drawback, but the plan's particular fuel problem is transporting an impractical load from Earth. Greater consumption across multiple trips doesn't itself show that the new arrangement can't solve that problem.
- DCorrect
The plan calls for about 500 days on Mars—more than a year. Evidence that people may not function effectively in low gravity beyond a year directly threatens the extended stay and the research it is supposed to allow.
That is stronger than B's unfinished technology. B identifies development that might be completed; D raises a human limit conflicting with the specified mission duration. We don't need to claim the crew would die. Inability to function effectively is enough.
- E
Restrictions on space funding could block either plan. They don't specifically challenge this alternative's advantages.
