Reading the passage
We've already predicted that Jackson puts too much weight on race, and his own examples don't justify the distinctions he draws. We're looking for some version of that criticism.
What we’re looking for
The first paragraphs introduce his approach and its place among other critics. The Guillén example then shows where it fails. An answer should capture that judgment, not just a difference between his two books.
Working the answers
- ACorrect
The central feature is judging literature primarily through ethnicity. Other North American critics share it, and the Guillén comparison exposes a weakness: the cited texts don't justify distancing him from his colleagues. The wording is abstract, but each part has a concrete match.
- B
Jackson embraces the North American perspective, not the opposing racial-blending approach. This criticizes him for a position he doesn't hold.
- C
The problem is how Jackson interprets his selected texts, not that the selection is unrepresentative of the larger literature.
- D
The books differ in scope, but the writer doesn't argue that the later book undercuts the earlier one's assumptions.
- E
Jackson tries to distance Guillén from a literary movement. An effort to integrate writers into worldwide movements goes in the opposite direction.
