Reading the passage

We've already identified the common thread: both writers describe ways to bring useful financial services to poor people. A discusses successful lending and the additional demand for savings; B describes SafeSave's flexible banking service. Look for that shared purpose without turning a feature of only one account into the purpose of both.

Working the answers

  • A

Offering more than loans is important to A's closing argument, and SafeSave does offer more. But B primarily describes its particular service and prospects; it doesn't organize its discussion as a general recommendation that providers should expand beyond loans. Choice B more fully describes their shared purpose.

  • B
    Correct

Both explain successful approaches to serving poor customers: Grameen's lending and BRI's savings in A, and SafeSave's flexible service in B. “Successful” doesn't require every approach to have achieved every long-term goal already.

  • C

These are financial services, not an examination of employment opportunities. Providing credit might help someone's work, but neither writer centers the discussion on creating jobs.

  • D

A contrasts unsuccessful state banks with successful approaches. B doesn't describe a failed provider to establish the same comparison, and its service extends beyond credit.

  • E

Economic sustainability is a future prospect for SafeSave, not something B demonstrates as achieved. A also doesn't organize its discussion around proving that good work and financial sustainability coexist.
