Reading the passage
Our main-point prediction was that Torchy Brown makes social commentary through its heroine's adventures: it celebrates African American achievement while also showing discrimination and the need for courage. The opening adds another source of significance—its pioneering African American woman creator.
What we’re looking for
Look for an answer broad enough to capture that analysis of the comic. One detail about its music or fairy-tale elements won't cover the whole discussion.
Working the answers
- A
The focus is a particular comic strip, not a survey of Ormes's influence and legacy as a cartoonist. Her identity and success help explain the strip's significance, but the account doesn't review her broader career or later influence.
- B
The connection to jazz is one part of the third paragraph. It supports the larger account of the comic's significance; it isn't the subject of the whole discussion.
- C
Ormes does compare her comic's form to improvisation, but we aren't given a sustained comparison of artistic techniques. This leaves out the cultural concerns and practical lessons that occupy much of the account.
- D
The second paragraph supplies that resemblance. The next two paragraphs explain why the comic matters beyond its fantastic adventures, so stopping at the fairy-tale comparison misses the larger purpose.
- ECorrect
This captures the unusual creator and the themes that make the comic significant. It is broader than our initial social-commentary wording, but that extra emphasis comes directly from the opening.
