Reading the passage
Both writers see useful results from microfinance. A explains how very poor borrowers obtain credit and how BRI meets a large demand for savings. B describes turning small savings into “usefully large lump sums.” The common ground is that these services improve what poor customers can do with their money.
Working the answers
- A
Neither writer says small size is necessary for long-term viability. B actually sees growth as part of SafeSave's path toward full sustainability.
- B
We don't get an efficiency comparison with regular banks generally. SafeSave's cost-cutting practices and Grameen's repayment arrangements don't establish that broader ranking.
- CCorrect
Access to credit and the ability to accumulate useful sums support economic progress. We don't need a detailed claim about exactly what every borrower buys. The described services expand customers' financial opportunities, which both writers present positively.
- D
B describes a model without groups, but A praises a model that uses them. Different successful approaches don't amount to shared opposition to requiring groups. B's alternative doesn't erase A's favorable account of Grameen.
- E
A's criticism of failed state banks isn't a rejection of all government assistance. BRI's savings accounts are government-guaranteed. B likewise offers no rule that providers should work entirely without government help.
