Reading the passage
Our first broad takeaway from A was mixed results: some attempts to serve poor borrowers failed, while others worked. But the ending adds a more useful lesson. Successful lending models still overlook something if they assume poor customers only need loans. BRI shows the value of offering savings too.
What we’re looking for
So the main point should include both the success of lending and the opportunity to provide more. A claim about Grameen alone, or about government failure alone, will be too narrow.
Working the answers
- A
The author identifies an incomplete assumption, not a decline in these organizations. Grameen's model is described as having real virtues and spreading worldwide.
- B
The spread is supported: A explicitly says the model has spread around the world. But this only captures the Grameen discussion. It leaves out the final challenge to credit-only services and the successful savings example.
- C
We aren't given a prediction that competitors will replace Grameen unless it changes. The author argues that additional products can help, not that Grameen faces this particular threat.
- D
The opening supports this comparison, but government failure is the starting contrast, not the whole point. D misses the lesson about meeting needs beyond credit.
- ECorrect
This captures both stages: organizations such as Grameen found ways to lend successfully, and additional products can serve poor customers better. BRI's savings accounts supply the concrete example of that improvement.
