Reading the passage
Build the relationship before comparing stories. Marsalis uses older traditions as material for new, individual music. His promotion of the older masters helps make the originals more commercially attractive, and companies turn toward those old recordings at the expense of new performers.
What we’re looking for
So we want more than an unintended consequence. Look for someone promoting a new product through its connection to an older one, only to shift attention toward the older product and away from the new. That is the particular way the effort backfires.
Working the answers
- A
This has an unintended consequence, but the council slows housing development and prices rise. It doesn't promote something new by appealing to an older alternative, then drive demand toward that alternative. The general idea of backfiring is only part of our prediction.
- BCorrect
The hybrids correspond to new music that draws on traditional elements. Their resemblance to older tomatoes is the selling point, just as older jazz provides the admired foundation. But the promotion boosts the traditional varieties while hybrid sales decline. That matches the shift toward originals at the expense of the newer work the promotion was meant to support.
- C
The wool producer benefits from other companies' less appealing products. It did not cause that shift through its own attempt to promote something new. The person benefiting and the person whose effort creates the outcome occupy different roles here.
- D
This firm's sales fall because new competitors enter the market. Marsalis's problem is not simply that upstarts compete successfully with him. His own emphasis helps direct the companies toward the past.
- E
A protective campaign creates an unintended ecological consequence, so this also backfires. But a fishing ban allowing predators to thrive does not match promotion of new work increasing the appeal of older work. Sharing the unfortunate result is not enough to match the process.
