Reading the passage
The second paragraph leaves us with a question: why did migration keep going while the income advantage was shrinking? Paragraph three proposes an answer—earlier migration lowers the obstacles to later migration. Paragraph four supplies concrete evidence about information, travel, housing, and help settling in.
What we’re looking for
Together, those paragraphs explain continued migration. Keep that separate from the first paragraph’s explanation of how it began.
Working the answers
- A
The authors do not dispute the original explanation involving labor demand and the income gap. They explain a later development that those starting conditions do not fully account for.
- B
A survey of repercussions would examine migration’s effects on the regions or people involved. Here, the authors use the help earlier migrants provided to explain why more people continued moving.
- C
The first two paragraphs set up the event and the puzzle. The authors’ explanation is supported by the cost discussion and empirical evidence that follow; it is not derived from evidence in the opening paragraphs.
- DCorrect
The second paragraph asks why migration continued, and the next two answer: the movement created networks that lowered the costs and difficulties for subsequent migrants.
- E
More evidence for the opening claims would further establish what triggered migration. The later paragraphs instead address its persistence. Evidence that friends supplied housing does not establish that World War I increased Northern labor demand.
