Reading the passage
The subtractive image shows what changed from the baseline. It can therefore make a few regions stand out while concealing activity that occurs across the brain in both conditions. The author’s concern is the impression this creates: a picture of differences can look like a picture of separate, localized mental functions.
Working the answers
- A
This extends the objection to medical applications. The opening expressly distinguishes the straightforward value of medical imaging from the more questionable psychological use. The author does not conclude that the method’s results are invalid for medical applications.
- B
The images appear to favor localization, not Uttal’s distributed account. The author argues that this appearance is misleading; that does not turn the appearance into strong visual support for Uttal.
- C
No scans of angry subjects are reported as demonstrating this result. The example about anger and reasons is used to question a clean conceptual division, not to report an experiment locating emotion.
- DCorrect
Subtracting distributed activity creates the impression of localized functions, making the modular theory seem strongly supported. The author’s point is that this apparent support depends on what the image leaves out.
- E
The third paragraph states that the method depicts the difference in oxygen consumption between the two measurements (paragraph 3). That description is the basis of the criticism, not a misconception the author rejects.
