Reading the passage
The third paragraph raises a challenge to the distributed view: if that view is right, why do scans show distinct areas lighting up? It then explains the subtraction method. The final paragraph answers the challenge by showing why the resulting images can be misleading.
What we’re looking for
The relationship matters: apparent evidence against the critique is explained without giving up the critique.
Working the answers
- A
The images seem compatible with the modular premise; that is why they pose an apparent challenge. The author does not reject them on the ground that they conflict with that premise.
- B
The author does not revise the opening critical position to accommodate the images. Instead, the final paragraph explains why their apparent support for localization need not be accepted.
- C
The second paragraph presents the distributed-activity alternative, not an outdated model on which the research method relies. The final paragraph criticizes the impression created by subtraction; it does not diagnose reliance on an obsolete theory.
- D
The final paragraph does not say the evidence defeats both competing views. It explains why the images fail to settle the issue against the distributed account.
- ECorrect
The second paragraph challenges the separation of mental processes into localized modules. The final paragraph shows why the images discussed in the third paragraph do not defeat that challenge: they subtract out distributed activity and can therefore make localization look more convincing than it is.
