Reading the passage

That sentence introduces the puzzle: migration continued and even accelerated while North–South income differences narrowed. The rest of the argument explains how this could happen. So its job is to set up the fact that needs an explanation.

Working the answers

  • A

Identifying an unanswered question does not establish that earlier research was misguided. The sentence does not make that criticism.

  • B

This sentence presents the later development; it does not yet extend the explanation to account for it. The authors introduce their proposed explanation in the next paragraph.

  • C

The sentence concerns what happened after the Great Migration began, not a dispute about wages before 1915. We are not told that Northern and Southern wages had previously been equal, either.

  • D
    Correct

Continued migration despite a narrowing income gap is the fact the authors seek to explain. It leads directly into their proposal about migration creating momentum.

  • E

The authors call the explanation less clear, not impossible. They then spend two paragraphs proposing and supporting one.
