Reading the passage

The historians' transnational perspective follows a people across borders and back to African roots. It asks how a dispersed community shares a culture and history, rather than treating each existing nation-state as the natural boundary of the story.

What we’re looking for

A study linking African American culture with traditions found in Africa would fit that approach particularly well.

Working the answers

  • A

Comparing European and U.S. nationalist mythologies stays focused on those nations' narratives. It does not exemplify the dispersed African community and its shared historical roots described here.

  • B

This changes the criterion used to characterize nations, but still organizes the study around the national characters of the United States and European states. That differs from following the history and culture of a dispersed people.

  • C

A chronicle of U.S. territorial expansion keeps the state and its actions at the center. Those actions provide context for the historians' concerns, not the best example of their alternative approach.

  • D

Emigrationist sentiment is relevant, so this is tempting. But this study makes its effect on U.S. foreign policy the focus. It is less direct than E as an example of reconstructing the cross-border cultural history of the diaspora itself.

  • E
    Correct

Connecting African American traditions to traditions shared among African cultures traces cultural continuity across national boundaries. That matches the effort to write the history of a dispersed people with roots in Africa, rather than a history bounded by one state.
